Renal allograft pathology related to Polyomavirus BK

Dr. Randhawa’s interest is primarily in renal transplantation, with a heavy focus on polyoma viral infections. Currently ongoing NIH funded projects include development of molecular tests for diagnosis of BK virus infection, delineating the genetic diversity and phlyogeny of this virus, evaluating the role of smoldering infection in chronic allograft nephropathy, and studying the antibody and cell mediated immune response to this virus. A major effort is also underway using molecular modelling techniques to discover anti-viral drugs directed against the viral VP-1 and large T antigen genes. A variety of clinicopathologic studies in general transplant  pathology are also in progress. These focus on applications of the Banff Schema to  diagnostic evaluation of biopsy material from renal transplant recipients.
