PAUL SZABOLCS, MD

Chief, Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapies, Children's Hospital of UPMC

Education:
MD, Semmelweis University School of Medicine, Hungary

Research Area(s):
Human Immunology

Research Interests:

  • Understanding the biology of adaptive T cell immune reconstitution and probing the mechanisms of T cell dependent tolerance acquisition ex vivo after HLA-mismatched cord blood and bone marrow transplantation (BMT).
  • Laboratory based studies query how immune competence and tolerance will develop from haploidentical living donor and deceased donor blood and marrow transplantation in tandem with solid organ grafts. Lessons learned from primary immunodeficiency patients with end organ lung failure are being translated to patients with sickle cell disease, IPF, and bone marrow failure syndromes.
  • Design and conduct prospective trials with immunoablative therapies for Crohn’s disease, SSC, and other autoimmune diseases with collaborative teams performing correlative mechanistic studies.

The goal of my Research is to explore the minimum requirements for organ donor derived hematopoietic cells preventing rejection and establishing donor derived immune competence and associated tolerance.  We are working at the interface of bone marrow and solid organ transplantation.
